Flight Deck

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I’ll hit the brakes, he’ll fly right by … of course one of the iconic quotes from Top Guns fly by the wire, Maverick, falling nothing short of the flying from the Red Bull Air Race pilots.

Reaching speeds up to 230 mph, and G-Forces up to 12G’s.

Blue pylons must be crossed with level flight, and Red ones the planes must be in Knife Edge flight, or where the wings are perpendicular to the ground.

I took the camera to get some footage, haven’t really gone through it, but I hope that theres atleast a few good shots!

Street Hockey & a Ferrari

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

We brought it back this weekend with a long game of street hockey.  How this came up I don’t know, but if you can break out the sticks and get a game going don’t think twice about it.  The bounces were pretty one sided the whole game, which ended up being 5-1 with my team on the short side.  It probably had a lot to do with our goalie not holding up between the pipes as the ball transitioned from team to team. The one thing that closed the first period, and got the crowd to its feet was the surprise unveiling of the Ferrari 430 that came out to resurface the court, and take a few hot laps before the 3rd period got underway.

Skipping stones was another old time favorite, that never gets old.

Getting Down

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

This past weekend was the Downtown Hoedown, what I’m pretty sure is the largest country music festival in the United States.

Not that this is our favourite kind of music, but how could we not go.  When we got there late in the afternoon on Saturday, the first thing we saw was an Air Force fly-over, which reminded me of the time I was in Pensacola, FL where the Blue Angels are from and got to go to their base to watch them practice.

What surprised me most was the amount of people that were there.  I was at the same venue last year for a different concert, and this time there was atleast double the head count.  While the music was good, there wasn’t too much interaction with the bands as most of them weren’t headliners until later in the evening, so we started to take notice of the eclectic variety of people that populated the event.

Even Jack Sparrow decided to show up.

Water always Wins

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I was at this fly-fishing expo the other day.  Something to start off what we do in the summer around here.  It’s always a nice and easy trade off going from winter to summer, or summer to winter because in either season our weekends are filled with either skiing or fishing.  By the time you are ready for it to be warm, you’ve realized how long its been since you were on the river; same happening in the end of summer, you just cant wait to get back to the mountain.  Anyways the coolest booth that was there had this water table that showed the effects of erosion.  Now its one thing to talk about erosion over a period of time, and you could kind of understand it.  But all you had to do was watch the water flow through the sand on the table and you can understand just how serious erosion is.  Within 5 minutes the strait moving stream would meander widely, only to break through its point bar, creating an oxbow.  I missed their full on demonstration, but the lady there was super nice and was willing to tell me all about it.  I wish I could have stayed to see the next showing, but I was short on time and had to go.

Raining Colours

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The lobby of one of the buildings I was in today was so amazing.  I never would have guessed it from outside, but this was the coolest interior structure I’ve ever seen.  It was easily 200+ feet tall, and each of the petals, I’d say, had water showering down from it into the pool below.  The pool was really cool too as it was tiered steps that ended flush with the floor.

The Bamboo Shoots were a nice touch as well.

Prime

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Last night I was at the University of Michigan Hockey game.  College hockey is so sweet to go to, probably better than an nhl team.  It’s so much faster, and the skill level is just the same.  After missing two turns, and driving around the city we finally made it.

You would never know that this was an ice rink from the outside.
The seats we had were so prime.  We got tickets for the alumni suite that puts you right over the ice without anything in the way.
Probably the coolest job any college kid could have would be to drive the zamboni.
We got a vip tour of the locker room for authorized personnel only.  Definitely a top of the line set up for a college team.  Chris who was on the 96′ team when they won the championship was the one who took us through.
